Is A Windshield Replacement Free In South Carolina?

Cracks and chips in your windshield do more than make your car look bad. They’re dangerous. Small cracks lead to larger ones, which is why, in South Carolina, the law requires you to have your windshield replaced if you have significant damage.

If you have a small chip this may sound like an inconvenience especially if you don’t have the cash on hand to meet your deductible. Luckily, in 2023 a law was put into place that enables vehicle owners in South Carolina to have their windshield repaired or replaced with no out-of-pocket cost.

Here are 6 Facts About Windshield Replacement in South Carolina At No Out-Of-Pocket-Cost To You

1. It’s The Law

In 2023, South Carolina put SC Code § 38-57-75 onto the books. It states that deductibles for comprehensive coverage policies must be waived on vehicles that require a windshield repair or replacement. This means replacement will cost you zero money out-of-pocket. If you have full coverage, or comprehensive, this law applies to you. If you have liability, there will be an out-of-pocket cost.

2. This Doesn't Mean "Free" Windshield Replacement, It Means Waived Deductible or No Out-Of-Pocket Cost With Comprehensive Insurance Policy Holders

This is not a free windshield. It simply means that if you find yourself in need of replacing your windshield, if you have comprehensive insurance on your vehicle, your deductible will be waived. Other glass companies do advertise the waived deductible as a “free windshield” but we’re here to tell you that’s not the case. There’s a difference between “waived deductible” and “free” and we think it’s important to know the distinction.

3. The Source of the Windshield Damage Doesn’t Matter

Your windshield damage does not have to result from a collision to meet any requirement for the deductible to be waived. You should be able to fix or replace your windshield for zero out-of-pocket cost in incidents like vandalism, random rocks flying on the road, and natural disasters too. As long as your coverage is comprehensive.

4.Getting The Damaged Windshield Replaced Sooner Is Better

This is not a job you want to wait on. Not only is it dangerous for you to drive with a cracked windshield, you can get a ticket. The law in South Carolina requires the insurance company to waive the deductible for comprehensive insurance holders, but they also require you to get the windshield repaired or replaced right away.

5. This Option Isn't Available In All States

As residents of South Carolina, we are fortunate to live in a state that puts that kind of care into its citizens. Accidents happen and sometimes we just don’t have the cash on hand to pay that deductible. South Carolina knows that a clear view of the road is important for safety, and the law reflects that.

6. You Can Choose Who You Want to Replace Your Windshield

You do not have to go through a list of specialists that the insurance company sends you. You can select who you feel the most confident in. This gives you more control over what happens to your car.
